Chaperone policy – patient summary
At Arthur Medical Centre, your comfort, privacy, and dignity are very important to us. That’s why we offer a chaperone during any consultation, examination, or procedure — especially those that may be of a more personal or intimate nature.
What is a Chaperone?
A chaperone is a trained member of staff who is present during certain medical examinations. Their role is to:
· Support you during the examination
· Provide reassurance if you feel uncomfortable
· Act as a witness to ensure the consultation is carried out appropriately
· Help with practical matters such as undressing or positioning, if needed
When Can I Have a Chaperone?
You can request a chaperone at any time, and we will always offer one for examinations that may involve:
· Breasts
· Genital areas
· Rectum
You may also feel more comfortable having a chaperone during procedures that involve undressing, dimmed lighting, or if you’re feeling vulnerable in any way. We respect all cultural and individual preferences.
If a chaperone isn’t available right away, we can offer to reschedule your appointment unless the situation is urgent.
Who Can Be a Chaperone?
Chaperones at our practice are trained healthcare staff — usually a nurse, healthcare assistant (HCA), or trained Care Navigator. They understand the importance of privacy, dignity, and confidentiality.
You’re welcome to bring a friend or relative to your appointment for support, but please note that they do not replace a trained chaperone.
What Will the Chaperone Do?
· Be present in the room during your examination
· Stay near the examination couch, offering comfort and support
· Help you understand what’s happening if needed
· Be alert for any signs of discomfort and speak up if they’re concerned
They’ll also make a note in your medical record that they were present, or that you declined a chaperone.
Chaperones for Children and Young People
Children and teenagers are also entitled to a chaperone. In most cases, a family member can be present too, but a trained staff member will still be offered as an impartial chaperone.
What About Online or Video Appointments?
Even during phone or video consultations, we can still offer chaperoning where appropriate. If an intimate examination is needed during a remote appointment, we’ll explain your options clearly.
Our Commitment to You
All our chaperones are fully trained and have a current Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. They complete regular training to ensure they’re up to date with the latest best practice and guidance.
We aim to make every visit to our practice as safe, respectful, and comfortable as possible.
If you’d like more information or want to request a chaperone in advance, please speak to a member of our team.
